Is Your Health Portfolio Balanced?

We are all aware of the need to balance our financial portfolio so that in times of hardship or when disaster strikes — stock market drops, pink slips, etc — we will be affected by financial challenges as little as possible. Having a substantial bank account allows us many opportunities that people with lesser financial savvy and preparation must for ego.

Perhaps you are at a “comfortable” financial level, able to pay off bills and credit cards timely, and have enough disposable income to enjoy a good quality of life. Perhaps you enjoy an “extremely high” financial level, with unending “toys”, travel when and where you want, and other opportunities for the “good life”. Either way you are able to handle sudden financial challenges and able to take advantage of financial opportunities as they come your way. Feels good, doesn’t it?

But what about your health portfolio? When faced with challenges such as a cold, flu season, children’s ear infections, etc. do you just accept them as part of life? What about when disaster strikes in the form of a serious health challenge to you or a family member. Is your health bank account equipped to fight back?

In the United States, the average age of disability (when quality of life becomes so poor that you need help for daily activities of living) is 65 years old. Modern medicine is providing miracles in keeping us alive longer — increasing our “lifespan”. But what about the quality of our lives? If we want to continue our “health span” along with our “lifespan”, it is imperative to raise the level of our health bank account as well as balance our health portfolio.

If you think the cost of health care has gone through the roof now, wait until the majority of baby boomers reach the “age of disability”. Now is the time to take a serious look at your own health bank account and ask “Do I have all the energy I need each day?”, “What is my ‘cushion’ in case of serious illness?” and “Does my health portfolio need balancing?”

Health Care For Everyone; What is the Incentive to live a Healthy Life?

If everyone gets free health care what is the incentive to live a healthy life, eat right and work out every day? Why bother? After all if there is free health care for everyone why not just wait to you have a medical problem and then go get fixed, why bother to work out? Why bother to walk around the block every day; why bother to jog?

Do you see the problem with universal health care in the United States of America paid for by the government and our tax dollars? The entire idea is flawed. Personally I don’t want to pay for people who do not take care of themselves, do not exercise, abuse alcohol and drugs and eat crappy foods.

That is not fair to me and I should not have to pay for them. They don’t care so, why should I? And why should my taxes go up so people that don’t take care about themselves can abuse yet another government social program? Now you are probably saying; yet you Republicans; always complain about taxes and you never have a solution.

Well I say to you, I do have a solution and it is a really simple one; let’s give tax incentives for people who exercise, eat right and do not do drugs or abuse alcohol. Let’s reward people for getting back in shape and in the long run we will be Bucks ahead with a whole lot less people in our population with major medical issues down the road.

The Health Care Crisis in a Faltering Economy

Many American’s are writing their health care out of their budget due to the uncertain economy. The Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a poll, which showed that 53 percent of participants said that they or someone in their family has cut back on health care because of the high costs associated with it. Especially for American’s who are out of work, not having coverage can send health care costs skyrocketing with bills piling up rather quickly. The poll also indicates that more people are turning to home remedies and over the counter drugs, as opposed to seeking the help of a physician. Lastly, more American’s are not filling prescriptions and/or avoiding medical tests or treatments in order to just get by.

A few things that will help you save money is to request your own records and do it well in advance of your doctors appointment, Take note of any changes you have had in the last six months and write everything down before your visit, so you don’t forget to ask any important questions. Essentially, get the most out of one appointment as possible. Ask your doctor for free samples of any prescriptions to help keep costs down and ask about cheaper generic alternatives to your current medications.

American’s do have an option to ask for financial help as many hospitals and clinics usually have financial assistance programs. Some doctors, like Feltheimer of New York Presbyterian, lowers his fees to $50.00 for patients’ who are out of work or uninsured. Many doctors will work out a payment schedules, so do not hesitate to ask what your physician’s policies are. People with chronic or debilitating disease such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, can access the Patient Advocate Foundation. They provide help negotiating with insurers and helps people get the most out of their health plan. There are no financial requirements to qualify, so call (800) 532-5274 to be assigned a case manager.

Chitosan Research

One of the many remarkable diet control supplements that can substantially contribute to weight loss is Chitosan. Chitosan is a naturally occurring substance that resembles cellulose in its structure and is derived from a polysaccharide called chitin. Chitin is primarily found in the exoskeletons of shellfish such as shrimps, crustaceans and crabs. Shells of these animals are crushed into a fine powder. This powder is passed through a process of deacetylation resulting in the formation of Chitosan.

The most remarkable property of Chitosan is that it is a special fiber that acts as an effective fat binder at the rate of six to ten times its weight. The soaked up fat molecules are then converted into a form that is not suitable for absorption. Being a non-digestible substance, consumption of Chitosan does not add any additional calories into the body. Recent research has found that Chitosan has the ability to interfere with fat digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Apart from this, Chitosan also facilitates the excretion of dietary fat through feces. Research has shown that consumption of Chitosan in combination with ascorbic acid would reduce the fat levels significantly.

Along with controlling weight, Chitosan also has other health benefits. Chitosan has shown to effectively control the blood serum cholesterol levels. Research has shown that Chitosan could increase the level of HDL cholesterol in the body, while lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body. Chitosan performs the function of a cholestryramine and is particularly beneficial to patients suffering with coronary heart diseases.

How to Control Use of Animals in Medical Research?

Medical research is essential for progress. However, conducting research and developing treatments at the cost of making an animal suffer is not acceptable to several people. Apart from growing humane concerns and mounting economical pressures, availability of limited funds from funding agencies have facilitated a marked decrease in the irrational use of animals in research. As per a study conducted by a medical research group, the number of animals used in medical research annually has decreased significantly during the last 20 years.

Researchers are now looking towards finding better alternatives to animal research. Latest scientific advancements and technological breakthroughs have now made it possible to reduce the use of animals in medical research. Science has developed valuable non-animal research models such as cell cultures, human tissue sections and computer-simulation models. Cell and tissue culture experiments are being used extensively in identifying the medical benefits or toxicity associated with a medical compound.

In spite of all these developments, there would be certain situations such as blindness where the use of a complete animal model for research is inevitable. In these circumstances, proper awareness programs should be conducted for researchers regarding the handling of animals while conducting research.

Animal Ethics Committee should overview every miniature details in experiments involving animal use, including approving all research, teaching and testing procedures, supervising experiments, providing training to personnel about animal handling and maintaining proper animal care facilities. Ethics committee must ensure that the experiments being conducted do not harm the animal. Persons doing any research, teaching or experiment that is not approved by the Animal Ethics Committee should be prosecuted.

The activities associated with non-language for example playing or watching a sport, improves an individual’s capability to interpret lingo about their sports. It may be because parts of the brain which are usually used to perform become extremely occupied in inferring these languages.

Doctors proclaim that practicing to play and watching sports has influences on interpreting language by modifying the neurotic set of connections that carry knowledge to integrate regions dynamic in executing sports skills.

Studies prove that brain imaging discovered that when soccer players and fans pay attention to soccer lingo, they demonstrate rigorous actions in the brain areas which are used to design and pick well-learned physical movements. The improved movement in motor parts of the brain facilitates soccer players and fans to better interpret soccer language. Thus, the outcome proves that playing sports, or even merely watching it, creates a substantial inferring of language.
